Health Literacy San Diego's Health Education and Literacy (HEAL) is a cumulative literacy curriculum that teaches health information through adult basic education (ABE) and English as a second language (ESL) English literacy lessons.

HEAL teaches students:

  1. How to access healthcare, including scheduling medical appointments and locating local clinics, doctors and health resources
  2. To read and understand medication labels and treatment plans, including prescription labels and dosage instructions
  3. Tools and techniques to better communicate with doctors and healthcare providers

HEAL includes curriculum orientation, Instructor Guides, Lesson Overviews, Flash Cards, Evaluation, and Multi-level and Homework Activities.

HEAL is based on the Office of Vocational & Adult Education's Research Based Health Materials and Instruction Guide and customized to include: culturally appropriate health information, lessons that address mental health and physical health, and local resources, including 2-1-1 San Diego.  Click here to learn more about the HEAL Development Process.
