May 3rd QPR Suicide Prevention Training

QPR Suicide Prevention Training

This training is scheduled for May 3, 2012 from 4:00 - 5:00 pm am at Community Health Improvement Partners (9370 Chesapeake Drive, Suite 220, San Diego, CA 92123).

This training is open to the public; RSVP to Beth Ruland at 858-609-7967.

QPR Suicide Prevention Trainings educate how to recognize and refer persons showing suicidal warning signs, offer hope and know how to get help and save a life. This hour long training is offered on behalf of the SPC at no cost to attendees or host organizations.

QPR stands for Question, Persuade and Refer. A Gatekeeper is someone in a position to recognize a crisis and the warning signs that someone may be contemplating suicide.  QPR is like CPR - an emergency mental health intervention for suicidal persons. The trainings follow a nationally recognized suicide prevention training model, Question, Persuade and Refer (QPR) Gatekeeper training. QPR is like CPR - an emergency mental health intervention for suicidal persons.  A "Gatekeeper" is someone in a position to recognize a crisis and the warning signs that someone may be contemplating suicide.  Please note that the QPR trainings are designed for individuals who are not mental health professionals - they are aimed at community members, parents, friends, neighbors, teachers, caseworkers, promotoras, firefighters, and many others; anyone in a position to recognize and refer someone at risk of suicide.

Since September of 2011, we have trained over 1,100 community members on the QPR Trainings; and we are hoping to train as many community members as possible on these techniques in hopes of preparing the community and preventing suicides.
